How to watch video on your tv from pc

I have recently bought a new pc and would like to connect it up to my tv so that i can watch film, videos and more off the internet. Does anyone know how to connect pc to hdtv with a minimum of fuss. It's a samsung tv and a packard bell pc. I have as far as I'm aware the correct cable plugged into the pc and the tv but I don't get a picture on the hdmi source channel. I am getting the image on the pc source channel but have been told that it should go through a hd source channel for the best picture clarity. I was told by the shop assistant that it was one of the easiest models to do this to and was the main reason I purchased this model rather than the one I was looking at originally. I have found that the store doesn't offer support for this sort of thing either as apparently it isn't directly related to the pc, it is for me though as I didn't purchase a monitor.
